Rain gardens 'cut city pollution'

"Rain gardens" can dramatically cut the amount of pollution in urban storm water, according to a study by US researchers.
Most of the rain that falls on cities lands on impervious surfaces, such as roads, where it absorbs pollutants before it finally drains away.

The team says a shallow depression in a garden containing bark mulch and shrubs can remove up to 99% of toxins.

The findings appear in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

Researchers from the University of Connecticut found that the gardens significantly reduced the concentration of fertilisers, oil and particulates reaching storm drains.

Growing problem

Rain gardens, the researchers say, can also help reduce localised flooding by absorbing rain water from heavy downpours, reducing the risk of drains becoming overloaded.

For the study, two rain gardens were planted and frequently monitored over a two-year period to see how effectively they absorbed a range of pollutants.

One of the authors of the study, Michael Dietz, explained why they carried out the research.

"The concept of rain gardens has been around for 10 or 15 years but there has not been a lot of research.

"A lot of places are hesitant to use something that has not been verified, so we felt it was an important step to bridge that gap," he told the BBC News website.

The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that built-up urban areas generate nine times the amount of runoff water than woodlands of a similar size.

As the percentage of the world's population living in cities continues to grow, the problems of flooding and pollution are set to increase.

Dr Dietz hopes their findings will encourage town planners across the globe to consider using rain gardens.

"This is one tool that can used to mitigate the impact of runoff water in urban areas. It definitely has worldwide benefits because it is not a local phenomenon; it is going on all over the world," he said.

"Any tool we have that can help reduce the impacts of urbanisation is beneficial for everyone."

Garden bird survey gets under way
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to play their part in this weekend's annual Big Garden Birdwatch.
Households across the country are being asked to spare some time to count the different species they see, and pass the record on to the RSPB.

The annual count, which has been going since 1979, will reveal the most common winter bird.

The RSPB is hoping for an increase in overall numbers, despite some common species declining in recent years.

Nearly 400,000 people around the UK took part in the survey last year, observing 6 million birds in 200,000 gardens.

Project co-ordinator Richard Bashford said that, although there is now less woodland in the UK than in the past, birds have adapted.

"Gardens have a lot of cover and, of course, lots of people feed birds so birds are cottoning on to the fact that gardens are really good," he told BBC News.

"There's shelter, there's food, there's water, so quite a lot of these things are moving from the countryside to where we live.

"It's really good news because you can see wildlife very close to us."

But, despite this, he said many of the common species were in decline.

The house sparrow was the most common winter bird in 2005 with an average of 4.6 sparrows seen per garden.

This compares to an average of 10 per garden in 1979.

To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, watchers are invited to spend one hour on Saturday or Sunday counting the birds in their garden or local park.

They should record the highest number of each species seen at any one time.

An online survey form together with more details can be found on the RSPB website.

The great laid back (arty) influence of Essaouira makes it a good place for mooching about. Its picture perfect madina, everyday moroccan new town & Atlantic beach have made the place a centre for art - music - films & fashions, You could get run over by a Hollywood film crew - immobile on KIF listening to the trance like rhythems of Sub-Saharan 'GNAWA' music all in a day. For a almost better day out we have been to the countryside and the hills surrounding this South West area of Morocco, Which are the home of the Argan tree (see above photo), This slow growing thorn produces the magic Argan oil , high in vit é and used by the great and good as an anti wrinkle cream. The oil comè's from the nut & it takes 30KG of nuts to produce one litre of the oil. The extraction is very interesting as the nuts are fed to goats who dissolve the tough coating in their digestive system, They are then hand picked from the goat shit and split pulped and pressed. The local Berber tribes have used the oil for centuries and it is now a must have in the west.

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow

THr limbo of half forgotten things shiver and an ancient blizzard in an eclipse is what the world brought to its preordained impulses. The beauty was too short and entwined anger too long. rust was left ' hath melted like snow in the glance of the lord'at four eleven pm on the 6th of aug 1986 - a warm breeze gently massages the leaves of a london birch tree, it was a cloudless afternoon and the birds started singing a parting song.

A mysterious â painful and tormenting illness, DEPRESSION!
STOP THE STIGMA & IGNORANCE!!!!

Just after the seasonal-UN affective Ness of December, January and Feb it got into me. I know when Iâm about to get âclottedâ when I forget my pin number of my credit card completely, and everything becomes DEAD!. A white infinity of gloom â lack-lust and sluggish, (A melancholic senselessness). Itâs something you canât understand unless you have been through it, and itâs such a twisted emotional language a sort of abstract- that will not get you to âPull your socks upâ it takes time ,hard-work and understanding from people around you.
-WOE is me! When depression works itâs way into my interconnections I feel better off dead! But after a visit to the nut house-(hospital) and a packet of Tricyclics along with a packet of seeds, some TLC and a redirecting of my negative thoughts + gardening i can slowly walk into the Spring sunshine again, and the storm thank GOD is abating. The time in hospital was not great as you can imagine (in one big inhuman moment I âpast outâ with catharsis. But it wasnât âOne flew over the cockooâs nest BAD, not at all. The NHS realy is very good and understands this as a serious illness. It also gave me a focus to get out and be back in gardens- so I battled and bluffed and did just that. Strange though that my trek across the Sahara with itâs two nasty bites got me more idle attention then this Molotov cocktail going off in my mind. People still donât understand!!!.

The good news.
I strongly believe that gardens and gardening are a great tool in the line of defence of the 'BIG D' (they are creative âphysical and outside) Which is one of the reasons Iâm working towards getting a community garden/environmental centre in my own town, and from now on going to push with help, to get gardens on the battleground of mental health. The time of NDW could not be better as I have found out that spring is one of the worst times for mental health, I sort of die back with the garden in Autumn just like everyone and winter is a hike up the mountain , but itâs just being down, Not the abstract surreal mind set. The word depression is banded around so much that the spinning in either with physical and mental torment doesnât fit it at all.
I used to get pissed but this makes things worse ( waking up at three am in the middle of London doesnât do much for the EGO. So not drinking is a rule never to be broken by me)also to make me feel not so loony tune I always read the poems of the legendary âgoonâ and British comic genius Spike Milligan, He had the illness in itâs most powerful form (although any , weather- clinical, bipolar,reactive,endogenous or post-natal are all overwhelming in impact, and highly distressing!) âAnyone who can call the future King âA grovelling bastardâ , is all right in my book.and his book âdepression and how to survive itâ- written with his psychologist is spot on. Stop the ignorance & stigma of mental health , itâs not just the Woolfâs Tchaikovskys and the Cobainâs itâs the postman, nurse, gardener ect ect and I wouldnât wish it on G Dubya!.

The swagger of Spring has started, and the avalanche of pick 'n' mix is a supernatural lift. A carcass becomes something spiritual, and the sorcery and mania of nature is a thing to venerate in March.
You can get Brahms and Liszt just thinking about the plants, birds, sounds, colors, smells and textures at this time, and an appointment with the feral wilderness is like being an astronaut seeing the world from space. As a child i had an adversion to science fiction and my hypothesis grew from seeing Toads, Slugs, Frogspawn, the Devils coach horse and birds, the complex structures and their instincts are so weird, now i feel that the adrenalin culture and the impossibility's of life are paralysed by natures fitting's. Last week Spring started in my part of the World on a POLAR note !(March is alway's bipolar) But this got me a temporary neurotic encounter with a Nuthatch, THE STEALTH BOMBER of the natural world, for a split second we were homogeneous and i was looking into the deep voice of nature, this is my adrenalin culture!. Thinking about nest building and territorial adventure and a recognition that the natural world can OUT-STRIP Nasa , Microsoft or the Royal College of Art. We are, i think ?in danger of looking at it all through a bad pair of eyes and actually miss the point of the true wonderment and the sublime superiors that are all players in the burgeoning Spring. Not to be found in sensationalistic garden centers ,florist's and cable TV..........
